RadMedia HTPC

The RadMedia HTPC Model 3 is a Windows 7 Media Center based home theater computer.  This is designed for your living room to complement an HDTV and a home theater surround sound system.  All in one box you get an upscaling DVD player, Blu-Ray disc player, and DVR (Digital Video Recorder), that brings you Internet radio, and 7.1 surround sound.  The whole premise is ease of use to access all of your media through a big screen TV using a remote control.  This is the best value HTPC because everything is included in the price.  Unlike smaller systems, reliability is tops with standard computer components, and unlike proprietary boxes, you're getting a real computer with upgradability and unlimited expansion capability.

You can use it as a personal video recorder to record, pause, and rewind TV.  This also works with TV that has a set-top box, like Digital Cable and satellite TV.  The free program guide lets you schedule your favorite shows to be recorded.  It's constantly up to date, and shows you the next ten or so days of TV programming.  The base price includes one regular TV tuner for standard definition TV, and another for broadcast reception of HDTV over the air with an antenna, or potentially Digital Cable.  With this, you can record one show while watching another.  Or, you could watch a recorded program while an HD show and a regular show are recording.  The RadMedia will wake up to record shows that are on while you are away, and it will go back to sleep to conserve energy.  You can also search for programs by actor or director, and configure the guide to record a particular movie in the future whenever it becomes broadcast.

The RadMedia also connects your family photos and home movies to your TV.  With the included remote control you can present slide shows of your photos to friends and family.  Optionally you can add a second hard drive that automatically backs up everything on the first drive, which comes recommended to protect your data over the years.

With the RadMedia, the Media Center interface is loaded when the PC is turned on, so the Windows desktop and other Windows functions don't get in the way.  After some brief setting up, you can use the remote control and the wireless keyboard and mouse to begin configuring the TV program guide for your city.  One of the original appeals with the RadMedia was free broadcast HDTV.  With the right antenna and the right positioning, you can potentially get a better looking high definition TV picture than what a Cable TV company delivers.  This is because Cable companies often might apply additional digital compression to digital TV (so they can squeeze in more channels).  Although support for HDTV from DirecTV or Dish has been rumored in the past, it is unlikely to ever happen and you should continue using a regular satellite DVR for HD.

An Example CableCARD™

Now with Windows 7 new options are available for TV reception in Media Center.  Now you can receive unencrypted digital channels (High-Def and standard) over Cable, depending on your Cable provider.  Typically at least the local networks are available in HD unencrypted.  Additionally depending on your Cable provider you may be able to buy a Digital Cable Tuner device, sometimes called a DCT, which is what you could plug your TV cable into.  Then instead of renting a big Cable box or Cable DVR you can rent a CableCard (cheap or free) which you plug into the DCT.  The CableCard allows Cable subscribers to access the expanded HDTV tier as well as watching and recording premium movie channels.  Currently CableCard technology doesn't allow for On-Demand TV or Pay-Per-View programming, but Windows 7 supports additional technologies that will.  As long as you didn't care about On-Demand TV or Pay-Per-View you could readily replace your Cable box with a RadMedia HTPC.  In some Cable markets there are other hurdles, but overall Windows 7 is very much improving the home theater PC.  Other DVRs have limited space perhaps causing you to delete shows you haven't got around to watching.  An HTPC will allow you to store as much recorded TV as you have hard drive space. You can buy more storage as you feel you need it.  The RadMedia can allow you to record up to five HD channels at once.

The base price includes essentials to make your Media Center work optimally.  This thing is loaded.  You get a remote control and a wireless keyboard with media center remote controls built into it.  A cordless mouse is also included so the RadMedia can be used as a regular computer from your couch if you like.  It also by default includes a Wireless-N network adapter for connection to the Internet through a home network.

The RadMedia allows you to watch DVD's and Blu-Ray movies.  Now is the time to experience high definition digital movies through an HTPC.  Build your home movie library with over 5000 Blu-Ray disc titles now available.  Optionally you can add a Blu-Ray burner that can allow you to store high definition home movies on recordable BD-R or rewriteable BD-RE discs, playable on other Blu-Ray players.

The RadMedia HTPC is fast and powerful.  With the right TV, you may find that using it as a regular PC from the couch is viable for a moderate amount of use, although it's intended as one of a home's additional computers.  You're well suited to take advantage of Windows 7's features and capabilities, including video editing with Windows Live Movie Maker, and copying audio CD's onto the RadMedia with Windows Media Player.  With Windows 7 you can access videos, music, and pictures from other Windows 7 PCs with a HomeGroup.  If each PC in your home used Windows 7, anything could be played across your home network on the big screen TV with an HTPC. Media Center PCs include the capability to stream media content to other TV's in the home by adding Media Center Extenders, connected over a home network.

With the RadMedia you get more than just the obvious appeals, such as a high definition DVR with a free program guide, and the ability to enjoy the new high definition movie discs.  You get access to music services online, like Rhapsody, Pandora, Napster, and the Zune Marketplace.  Or, you can buy or rent movies that are streamed to your PC over the Internet, using iTunes, the Zune Marketplace, Amazon Video On Demand, or Blockbuster Online.  You can enjoy movies and TV shows through Hulu.com and watch on your main TV.  With a Netflix account you can stream certain TV and movies in high definition.

As an HTPC, or home theater PC, by definition you're going to get high fidelity audio and video.  You can get video with full fidelity 7.1 audio on a single HDMI cable, or get the video through DVI, or VGA cables, and get the audio from a digital SPDIF cable, or a set of analog cables.

Finally, as a PC that's been designed as a living room appliance, the RadMedia is the Media Center PC done right.  A number of trade secrets are utilized to make this system whisper quiet.

 AMD FX-8150 (Eight 3.6 GHz processors in one chip) +$185.00

The base CPU, the AMD Athlon II X3 455 processor, is suitable for the major features of the RadMedia PC, especially since the GeForce GPU does a lot of heavy lifting for the video.  You may want to consider stepping up to a faster CPU if you might get into more lively usage of the Media Center functions in the future, such as streaming TV video and media to as many as five Media Center Extenders in a larger home.  The AMD FX eight core CPU is also worth it for high performance with PC games.  With AMD's Turbo CORE technology the FX processors can kick into a turbocharged mode automatically.

System Memory

  • 4 GigaBytes of DDR3-1333 (Two 2GB modules in dual channel)

While Windows 7 computers work fine with only two Gigs, Microsoft's recommendation for using a Digital Cable Tuner suggests using four Gigs.

 Two 2 TeraByte Serial ATA 3.0 (6Gb/s) Hard Drives, configured for Mirroring +$299.00
 One 3 TeraByte Serial ATA 3.0 (6Gb/s) Hard Drive +$140.00
 Two 3 TeraByte Serial ATA 3.0 (6Gb/s) Hard Drives, configured for Mirroring +$460.00

  • Windows shows the formatted capacity for all hard drives as approximately 7% less than the capacity the drive is sold as.  For example a 640GB drive would show around 595GB capacity in Windows; 1TB offers ~930GB; 2TB offers ~1860GB or 1.86TB, etc.

People like to buy something that they don't have to worry or care about, and with that in mind, great care is given towards safeguarding your data.  The suggested storage configuration includes dual hard drives in RAID 1 mode, meaning that one drive is a complete backup copy (a "mirror") of the other.  This ensures that should you store valuable memories onto your RadMedia over the years, the data is protected from being lost.  Over time, one hard drive might eventually fail, but it's extremely unlikely that both would fail simultaneously.  When one hard drive fails some number of years down the line, just get another internal hard drive to replace it, and you won't lose a thing.  And, if you come to rely on the RadMedia for all of your TV scheduling and watching, the loss of a single drive will not impact the usability of the system.

Alternately a RadMedia Home Server can automatically back up data on the computers in your household, allowing you to restore files or a whole PC with little effort.  Alternately choosing Windows 7 Professional allows you to backup your entire computer to a network location, such as another computer on your network.

One TeraByte (1000 GigaBytes) gives you a whole lot of space for storing recorded TV, home videos, family photos, and whatever else you can think of.  The drive is sectioned off into what are called partitions, for what are known with PCs as a C drive and a D drive.  By default the C drive (the main partition) is 200 GigaBytes and the D drive is the remainder. The D drive is configured to store all of the recorded TV from the Media Center TV function.  Windows 7 also allows you the freedom to go into the Disk Management Control Panel and resize, or repartition your hard drive, for those experts out there who want to configure it 'just-so'.  Partitioning the hard drive keeps the performance for the Media Center TV functions optimized.

You can select the partitioning of the system drive if you want, from these options in this drop down box:

About 100MB of your hard drive space is taken up by a system utility partition.

Optical Drive:

* Your Choice:
 Blu-Ray ROM Drive / DVD Burner
 Blu-Ray Disc Burner / DVD Burner +$30.00

With the Blu-Ray drives you get the full version of PowerDVD Ultra, a $100 value.  This enables better high definition audio formats on movies.

There are a number of high definition camcorders out there, and with a Blu-Ray burner, one could conceivably author their own home movie in HD on a Blu-Ray disc.

TV Tuner Card Options:

* Your Choice:
 No TV Tuner Card -$130.00
 One PCI Combo TV/HDTV Tuner Card
 Two TV/HDTV Combo Tuner Cards, 1 PCI, 1 PCI-Express +$130.00
 One TV/HDTV Combo Tuner Card, One Quad-Tuner Digital Cable Tuner +$199.00

The RadMedia HTPC includes one PCI TV tuner card, with two tuners: one analog and one digital.  The analog tuner is usable for standard definition Cable TV, or optionally an S-Video input can be used for Digital Cable with a cable box, or standard-def satellite TV.  The digital tuner is usable for either broadcast reception of HDTV with an antenna, or depending on your cable TV provider, possibly viewing of unencrypted Digital Cable channels, including HD – which is sometimes called QAM or ClearQAM.

So two tuners with these various possibilities are good, but we're just getting warmed up.  With a second combo tuner card you can record up to two standard def shows, and two high def shows simultaneously.

With an optional 4-tuner Digital Cable Tuner card you'll be able to record up to six channels at once.  Watch and record all tiers of digital channels with four tuners available, then with the combo tuner card you can record one standard-def analog channel and either one ATSC over the air channel, or one ClearQAM channel on Cable.  The Digital Cable Tuner card has no support for analog channels so for certain channels and functions the combo tuner will still be required.  The DCT requires a Multi-Stream CableCard, also called an M-Card to work with four channels at once.

Not every cable provider has modernized to offering CableCards to their customers as an option instead of a cable box.  Other cable providers use something even newer called Switched Digital Video, which requires a Tuning Adapter with the CableCard, which the RadMedia also supports.  The cable provider would provide the tuning adapter along with the CableCard.

* Your Choice:
 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
 Windows 7 Professional 64-bit +$40.00
 Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit +$90.00

The RadMedia HTPC includes the Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system, which is the basis for the Windows Media Center platform of online services and entertainment.

DirectX 11, which will be increasingly important for gaming over the coming months and years, has debuted here with Windows 7.

The 64-bit versions of Windows 7 can take advantage of access to vastly more memory.

All versions of Windows 7 now include Windows Vista Ultimate's Complete PC Backup.  Windows 7 Professional includes all of the features of Windows 7 Home Premium including Windows Media Center, and it adds new features including Remote Desktop, Location-aware Printing, the ability to backup your computer to a network location, and the ability to connect to a business network with a Windows server.  Windows 7 Ultimate has everything in Professional and adds the ability to use Windows in foreign languages, BitLocker hard drive encryption, BitLocker To Go USB flash drive encryption, and the ability to boot to a .VHD virtual hard drive file.

Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate include XP Mode.  When you buy a computer with the AMD-V or Intel VT technologies built into the processor chip, they have the capability of using XP Mode to run a copy of Windows XP Professional in a window or even full screen on top of Windows 7.  This enables you to run old programs that maybe had complications when run under Windows Vista, when they were expecting XP.  Now you can use USB devices through XP Mode to make an older device work again, which didn't have Windows Vista drivers.  When it is set up your USB device and its software can work seamlessly in Windows 7 as if it were running under XP.

  • PowerDVD Ultra 12
This fifth generation Blu-Ray playback software powers the Blu-Ray movie functionality of the RadMedia HTPC.
