Add a TV tuner card to take advantage of the Media Center DVR capabilities of Windows 7.  With this you can receive cable TV or if you attach an antenna, ATSC HDTV digital broadcasts, depending on your area and your broadcast reception.  Since it's a combo card, the TV tuner and the HDTV tuner can be used simultanously - you can record one while watching the other. The key is just in using a good antenna, and pointing it right so you get reliable reception.  AntennaWeb.org can help you find HDTV broadcast towers in your area.  In certain areas depending on your Cable provider, this card can allow you to view unencrypted Cable HDTV channels – usually your network local channels.

With an optional 4-tuner Digital Cable Tuner card you'll be able to record up to six channels at once.  Watch and record all tiers of digital channels with four tuners available, then with the combo tuner card you can record one standard-def analog channel and either one ATSC over the air channel, or one ClearQAM channel on Cable.  The Digital Cable Tuner card has no support for analog channels so for certain channels and functions the combo tuner will still be required.  The DCT requires a Multi-Stream CableCard, also called an M-Card to work with four channels at once.

Not every cable provider has modernized to offering CableCards to their customers as an option instead of a cable box.  Other cable providers use something even newer called Switched Digital Video, which this also supports.  If you do not need Pay-Per-View channels or Video On-Demand features, you can avoid renting a big Cable box or Cable DVR and instead rent a CableCard (cheap or free).  Microsoft has a whole digital home ecosystem whereby with a computer with Windows 7 and a Digital Cable Tuner, you can record TV and watch it elsewhere around your home.  You can add an Xbox 360 console with an Xbox remote control to up to five TVs and access your Media Center guide and DVR along with recorded and live TV shows.  Some people like to buy something once and get multiple years of use out of it rather than paying monthly fees.  With a TiVo for example their deluxe guide has a monthly fee as well, compared to no fees from Microsoft for Media Center.  After the setup process, it's simple to use, and of course, used by millions.

The 64-bit versions of Windows 7 can take advantage of access to vastly more memory.

Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate include XP Mode which gives you the capability to run a copy of Windows XP Professional in a window or even full screen on top of Windows 7.  This enables you to run old programs that maybe had complications when run under Windows Vista, when they were expecting XP.  Now you can use USB devices through XP Mode to make an older device work again, which didn't have Windows Vista drivers.
