GamerNova™ is our ultimate line of higher performance gaming computers. This PC strikes a balance of a powerful Intel quad-core processor, and dual graphics cards in what is probably the best value in gaming graphics right now.  We start off with the Intel Core i7 model 2700 quad-core processor.  You also get the Intel P67 Express chipset with dual nVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 graphics cards in S.L.I. mode.  The best gaming PC's offer the ability to run more than one graphics card in the system to increase the graphics power, and also as an upgradeability factor.  You also get official support for running your choice of either SLI or CrossFireX multi-graphics card technologies.  A PCI-Express bridge chip boosts the use of multiple graphics cards, providing for a more powerful system (and at a greater expense) compared to typical P67 systems.

The new Intel Core i7 processors feature a built-in DDR3 memory controller, providing more bandwidth and faster access over the older Core 2 Quads.  It also features HyperThreading, which allows each of the four cores in the i7 to operate like two cores.  The result is an outstanding virtual eight core processor.  For system memory you get dual channel DDR3 memory, with a spacious eight Gigs.

The Core i7 processor features Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 Technology.  In certain circumstances the processor can dynamically turn off some of its cores and run the remaining cores at higher frequencies, resulting in better performance.  You could call it auto-overclocking.

For graphics, the GamerNova starts you off with nVIDIA's best value in dual high performance graphics cards, a pair of GeForce GTX 560's with 1 GigaByte of RAM apiece.  This gives you around 90% better performance in games including Battlefield 3 compared to the Radical Value i7.  Configure two Radeon HD 7970's for AMD's latest award winning graphics, or choose up to two nVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti, GTX 570, GTX 580, or GTX 590 cards in SLI.  Choosing an nVIDIA graphics option allows you to game with stereoscopic 3D glasses with an optional nVIDIA 3D Vision Kit.   For stereoscopic 3D gaming in 1080p choose dual GTX 570's or Radeon 6970's or better for the best performance.  Generally for the purpose of PC gaming you want to allocate more money to graphics rather than CPU power.  You can always start with one graphics card and add a second as you feel fit.  Unlike with some other gaming PC companies, KillaRad base model gaming PC's are good machines with no customizing required.

The GamerNova i7 Model 3 here has extra bandwidth compared to the average P67 system.  Its additional PCI-Express bridge chip brings the P67 chipset's bandwidth up to the level of the standard X58 of 2009.  This is better for use of dual graphics cards along with USB 3.0 and Serial ATA 3.0, also known as SATA-6G.  As these technologies are rolling out and becoming more widely adopted, a GamerNova PC is a smart choice since it can sustain fast transfer speeds better, getting the most out of the fastest gear.

By default the GamerNova i7 includes Windows 7 Professional, bringing you evolved Windows operating system technology with new enhancements designed to improve how you use your computer.  It builds on Windows Vista's newer features like built-in quick system-wide searching right on the Start Menu, and the slick Aero 3D interface.  Windows 7 Professional includes all of the features of Windows 7 Home Premium, including Media Center, and adds among other features, Windows XP Mode.  This provides a new level of compatibility for all of the Windows software you may have invested in over the years, and it even enables the use of USB devices that worked in XP, but not in Vista.

With Windows Media Center which is included, you can add a TV tuner card and a remote control to turn your PC into a DVR – Perfect for a home-office, bedroom, or a college dorm when paired with a large 23 to 27-inch flat-screen monitor.  Windows 7 has a new feature where you can easily shrink a video file down so it will fit on a portable media player such as the Microsoft Zune HD or a Windows Phone.  Windows 7 takes advantage of an nVIDIA or AMD graphics card to speed up this process like nothing else before, allowing you to take videos with you on the go much more simply.  With a KillaRad PC the power of the GPU is even harnessed with Microsoft SilverLight and Adobe Flash based websites.

Three or more Gigs is a good amount for a Windows 7 PC these days, and historically PC enthusiasts have desired twice the current amount in order to have more headroom for the future.  The main advantages of going over four Gigs would be seen by an avid multi-tasker, or in high-definition video editing.  While off the shelf PC's may include 8GB of cheaper, slower memory, ours is faster, which is what you'd expect from a custom PC.

  • The cost of hard drives has at least doubled due to record flooding in October in Thailand, where most hard drive components are made.  As such, hard drive prices are expected to be inflated through Spring 2012.
  • The Seagate Momentus XT is a new Hybrid-SSD hard drive that offers 4GB of SSD memory on top of a 500GB 2.5-inch hard drive to give faster boot times and improved performance.
  • A 500 Gig drive offers plenty of room for a massive library of games, applications, and music.  You may consider more storage space if you want to get into storing a massive amount of video files, such as Media Center usage with a TV tuner add-in card.
  • Windows shows the formatted capacity for all hard drives as approximately 7% less than the capacity the drive is sold as.  For example a 500GB drive would show around 460GB capacity in Windows; 1TB offers ~930GB; 2TB offers ~1860GB or 1.86TB, etc.

  • Solid State Drives are all memory drives with no mechanical parts, now with enough capacity to begin to replace hard disk drives.  They have the fastest transfer speeds available and technically have overall greater reliability.

Add a TV tuner card to take advantage of the Media Center DVR capabilities of Windows 7.  With this you can receive cable TV or if you attach an antenna, ATSC HDTV digital broadcasts, depending on your area and your broadcast reception.  Since it's a combo card, the TV tuner and the HDTV tuner can be used simultanously - you can record one while watching the other.  Add two cards, and you'll be able to mix and match recording or watching two HDTV channels or two standard TV channels – record four shows at once if you like.  Broadcast HDTV has a better picture because it doesn't have the extra digital compression that Cable and Satellite companies add in.  The key is just in using a good antenna, and pointing it right so you get reliable reception.  In certain areas depending on your Cable provider, this card can allow you to view unencrypted Cable HDTV channels – usually your network local channels.  You'll also be able to tune in FM radio with your computer using Media Center.

DirectX 11, which will be increasingly important for gaming over the coming months and years, has debuted here with Windows 7.

The 64-bit versions of Windows 7 can take advantage of access to vastly more memory. 

All versions of Windows 7 now include Windows Vista Ultimate's Complete PC Backup.  Windows 7 Professional includes all of the features of Windows 7 Home Premium including Windows Media Center, and it adds new features including Remote Desktop, Location-aware Printing, the ability to backup your computer to a network location, and the ability to connect to a business network with a Windows server.  Windows 7 Ultimate has everything in Professional and adds the ability to use Windows in most foreign languages, BitLocker hard drive encryption, BitLocker To Go USB flash drive encryption, and the ability to boot to a .VHD virtual hard drive file.

Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate include XP Mode which gives you the capability to run a copy of Windows XP Professional in a window or even full screen on top of Windows 7.  This enables you to run old programs that maybe had complications when run under Windows Vista, when they were expecting XP.  Now you can use USB devices through XP Mode to make an older device work again, which didn't have Windows Vista drivers.
